My main fields of interest are modern European history of ideas/intellectual history and historical theory/philosophy of history (especially relating to issues of method). I also have considerable expertise in Marx and the Marxian tradition.
I studied at the University of Saskatchewan, University of Toronto, and Columbia University, and have been a faculty member at the University of Iowa, the Australian National University, and the University of Virginia.
Currently (2018) I am working on a book on theory of history. An older project of a short biography of Marx has evolved into an "encounter" with some of his ideas in the light of recent developments (a surfeit of Marx biographies have come out in the last few years). Right now (May 2018) I am writing a review essay on the long-awaited MEGA2 edition of the so-called "German Ideology."
