Een relativist die dat niet wilde zijn: bij een intellectuele biografie van Jan Romein // [A relativist who did not want to be one: on an intellectual biography of Jan Romein]

Abstract
Summarizes and critiques A. C. Otto's dissertation about Jan Romein (1893-1962) (see related entry 49A:132). Otto shows Romein's insecurity, doubts about love, religious crisis, and fear of the future, turning him into a relativist. Romein's cultural criticism was inspired by Johan Huizinga and Karl Marx. He was a progressive intellectual but also a conservative worried about the loss of tradition and values. His interaction with colleagues was tense, especially around the development of theoretical history as a specialization.
