Comments on Hayden V. White's article in this journal issue. "The most serious difficulty for the interpretation of White's paper is . . . that it seems eventually to fall back upon a conception of the nature and status of history which, for most of its length, it fails not only to elucidate, but even overtly to recognize as valid.
