Abstract
In this paper I organize different meanings of the term theory of history in three ways conceptualizing them with brief examples of the theories of three authors. The first meaning concerns he theory of history as a theory of knowledge generated by the historians, I demonstrated how the considerations of Hayden White, Michel de Certeau and Jörn Rüsen. The second refers to the so-called philosophies of history, I exemplify with the proposals of the Marquis of Condorcet, Friedrich Hegel and Karl Marx. The third meaning is relative to what I have called specific theories of history, I illustrated with the ideas of Carlo Ginzburg, Reinhart Koselleck and Michel Foucault.
