Abstract
Notes the seminal importance of 'La Méditerranée et le Monde Méditerranéen à l'Epoque de Philippe II' (1949) by French historian Fernand Braudel (1902-85) and other works in the modern approach to the interpretation and understanding of history. The introduction of other social sciences, the concept of the 'longue durée,' the secondary importance of events, and other new ideas into the study of history has made Braudel's work a classic. Contemporary historians are not obliged to imitate him, but they are able to complement him through attending to what our age demands; it is impossible to ignore the vast panoramic view of history that Braudel proposed.
