Historian's metaphysical beliefs and the writing of confessional histories

Abstract
An essay is presented on the writing of confessional histories and the role of historians' metaphysical beliefs in their work. According to the author, secular historians' exclusion of the possibility that God or other supernatural beings could exist is just as scientifically unfounded as any religiously-informed argument. It is suggested that historians should bracket their own metaphysical beliefs in order to understand the experiences of the religious people they are studying.
