On historiographical progress

Abstract
Notes the neglect of historiographical progress as a theme in philosophy of history and comments on the problems of deriving workable criteria for analysis of historical progress from extant philosophies of history. Separation of progress in historical writing from progress in research is called for as is recognition that progress in writing is more problematic than progress in research. Historical progress is topological, stemming from continual generation of new topics, rather than imparting new insights or answers to old questions.
