The evolution of the historical thought of Marc Bloch // [The evolution of the historical thought of Marc Bloch]

Abstract
Confronts Bruce Lyon's analysis of Marc Bloch's (1886-1944) evolution as a historian. Contrary to Lyon, the author stresses the basic continuity in the historical thought of Bloch. From his early writings until his wartime contributions, Bloch stressed the need for comparative history, the importance of social history, and the subordination of the role of the individual to that of the group. While he considered knowledge of history essential, he was not prepared to draw practical lessons from history.
