Abstract
Discusses the use of metaphors as cognitive and heuristic instruments for designing and writing historical narratives. In the historical sciences a prescriptive type of metaphor (termed a diaphor) is dominant; in the physical sciences a descriptive type of metaphor (termed an epiphor) dominates.
