Freiheit und Notwendigkeit in Schellings 'system des transcendentalen Idealismus:' Zur aktualität geschichtsphilosophischen Denkens

Abstract
German philosopher Friedrich von Schelling (1775-1854) developed a philosophy of history that encompassed many seemingly opposed and incongruent aspects, such as free will and determinism. After an introduction on Immanuel Kant's thought along these lines and Schelling's 'Ist eine Philosophie der Geschichte Möglich?' (1797-98), his 'System des Transcendentalen Idealismus' (1800) is examined in detail. Schelling's approach agrees that "a priori" philosophies of history are invalid, yet indicates that a philosophy of history per se is not.
