Abstract
Historians are inevitably led to adopt theoretical positions classifiable as abstract (concerned with epistemology), practical (tied to methodology), and pragmatic (arising from the second but taking into account the first). Pragmatic theory is examined from the point of view of "meta-theories" and a problem-solving approach in the context of two different approaches to urban history.
