Abstract
Rejecting both the uncritical reliance on and use of the concept of national character (or identity) in the social sciences and radical skepticism, an alternative approach to the study of this historical phenomenon is advocated. A historical study of national identification and national thought is proposed, based on approaches developed in the field of comparative literature.
