Biography and/or project

My main area of research is 18th-century French literature and history with a specific focus on the relation between the Enlightenment and French Revolution. I also have broader interests in representations of time and historical agency. My first book ‘The Calendar in Revolutionary France’ considers the rise and decline of the French Republican calendar alongside the literary career of its progenitor, Sylvain Maréchal. My current project ‘World History as World Court: The Theatrical Origins of Human Rights’ considers how the eighteenth-century came to construct history as a universal moral tribunal.
