Erklärung und Theorie in der Geschichtswissenschaft

Abstract
Positivist scientific methodology is inappropriate for history, which instead uses a hermeneutic model based on intention as a means of explanation. It claims historical knowledge is unique, emphasizing 'Erklärung' [interpretation], rather than mere 'Verstehen' [knowledge]. Even this method is inadequate. History is essentially narration, and the organization of historical writing is itself part of its content.
