Towards a new definition of history

In this paper, I look at a selection of definitions of history given by a number of eminent historians of my youth and a selection given by the ‘postmodern’ philosophers of history of more recent times. My purpose in so doing is to arrive at a new definition of (my) history, one that, ideally at least, will, if possible, accommodate the best of the old definitions and the best of the new. Not surprisingly I find some difficulty in doing this, and am forced to make a number of difficult choices, not all perhaps as philosophically sound as I would wish. But in the end I arrive at a satisfactory definition of history, one that at least satisfies me, a definition that is to say of (my) history.
