Emplotment and historicization: recent German histories about national socialism and modernity

Abstract
The term "emplotment" is used by Hayden White to represent his structural analysis of historical writing; it has proved useful not only to his followers, but to many historians critical of White's theoretical positions. Post-World War II German historians, in trying to come to terms with Nazism, Hitler, and the Holocaust, have made use of the concept of emplotment in their analyses.
