La política como razón moral. Saavedra Fajardo y la Historia // [Politics as moral reason. Saavedra Fajardo and history]

Abstract
The Saavedra Fajardo political thought was an important attempt to modernize the supporting doctrines in favor the XVII century’s Spanish monarchy. In this sense, History was regarded by Saavedra as an indispensable basis for political knowledge and source of wisdom (the good government ideal). For this reason, he argued the need for a strong morality that must be obeyed and observed by all parts, especially kings, princes, and their ministres. His influence came to thinkers as Algernon Sidney, between others. According to Saavedra, to rule should be an ethical activity. To fail the moral duty’s fulfilment pertaining to every power means the irretrievable loss of good judgement.
