Introduces the recent volume 'Nazionalismi di Frontiera: Identità Contrapposte sull'Adriatico Nord-Orientale, 1850-1950' (2002), edited by the author. The book addresses the question of national identity in the northeastern Adriatic region, an area with deeply entrenched ethnic and linguistic pluralism, by attempting to identify the dynamics of national identity at both social and institutional levels.
