A critique of the philosophy of history of the Dutch historian F. R. Ankersmit. Ankersmit rejects so-called narrative realism and prefers, what he calls, narrative substances. The latter are linguistic terms that assist the historian in describing the past, but not necessarily reality. Ankersmit also rejects objectivity and causal explanations. The author disagrees with Ankersmit's philosophy of history, which he considers a variant of historicism, noting that historians do describe reality and can explain causal relationships.
