The opening chapters of the book take up a number of issues that may or may not interest today's historian: whether history is an art or science, the advantages and disadvantages of universal histories over smaller histories, etc. But Kracauer's larger argument is unique: comparing history and photography. The photographer recalls back into reality aspects of our familiar world that we have lost sight of; similarly, the historian seeks to recall into the present aspects of what once was.
