The idea of universal history both in the liberal and Marxist versions has entered a period of crisis. The Holocaust has shaken the confidence of Western civilization in itself, sparking new reflections on universal history. Universal history is not only the history of successes but also of failures and evil. The opening of universal history to non-Western cultures and the history of nature as well as humanity can constitute the bases of a new universal history.
