Examines the claim that the natural sciences are nomothetic (establishing abstract general laws for indefinitely repeatable processes) while history is idiographic (concerned with the understanding of unique and nonrecurrent events). Holds that despite these apparent differences, the logical structure of historical explanations is not radically different from that of the generalizing sciences. Discusses the logic of necessary and sufficient causes. (am)
