Paradigms, Schools, Traditions: Conceptualizing Shifts and Changes in the History of Historiography

Abstract
At the end of the 1980's there is some reshuffling going on in the house of Clio." Disputes among practitioners of social history focused on who had the right to claim the field and what other academic disciplines could legitimately contribute to it. This article surveys the positions, noting the categories used by historians themselves to conceptualize them, and relating the conflicts to ideology and political culture.
