Discusses the influence of the German translation of Otto Urban's 'Ceská Spolecnost 1848-1918' [Czech society, 1848-1918] (1982) on international historians' understanding of 19th-century Czech history. Describes the philosophical work of Czech statesman and philosopher Tomás Masaryk in the 1890's and relates it to practical politics.
