The History Primer

Abstract
Makes a rigid distinction between narrative and analysis, analyzing competing explanations of the failure of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. In Hexter's view, "the analytical model...minimizes what was ineluctably there in the past: the contingencies of times, places, durations, conjunctures, catastrophes, and persons" (142). See review by Bruce #Kuklick, History and Theory 11 (1972): 352‑359. On Hexter's historiographical views more generally, see #Mink, "The Theory of Practice." (Abstract via Allan Megill)
