Makes a rigid distinction between narrative and analysis, analyzing competing explanations of the failure of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. In Hexter's view, "the analytical model...minimizes what was ineluctably there in the past: the contingencies of times, places, durations, conjunctures, catastrophes, and persons" (142).
